Detroit is a city that government and big business abandoned. Detroit was the engine of the American Dream.
The world watched as Detroit became the “silicon valley” of intense change that pushed the horse and buggies to the pages of historic nostalgia. The innovation of the automobile made Detroit the center of innovation and symbol of a generation on the move. The transformation of Detroit from a small Midwestern City to an energetic city of 1.5 million citizens was breathtaking. The drive of the motor led to the emergence of a unique part of American entertainment, Motown. Detroit seemed indestructible.
But as can be seen today with big Tech, staying in place and glorifying yesterday’s success is a death knell for an industry and a city. As foreign manufacturers built better and cheaper motor vehicles with innovation, currency leverages and imbalance labor laws, Detroit main source of economic growth started to stumble. Big Tech should study the history of the fall of Detroit when assumed market dominance is challenged. Detroit stood stunned and retreated into attacking detractors and competitors. The devastating result of such a policy, rooted in failure to fight for innovation and investing in entrepreneurialism of workers and community development, can be examined from the Detroit Timeline.
The obvious take away from the fall of Detroit is that local and federal governments failed in rectifying the failings of the US Auto industry.
However, the hard-working people of Detroit took matters in their own hands and turned to Entrepreneurship as the Turnaround Plan.
