Artificial intelligence is advancing at the same time as the global economy is becoming more fragmented. AI innovation is concentrated in a small number of economies, while the gains from AI depend on technologies, intermediate inputs, data, investment, and know-how moving across borders. This column shows that fragmentation can therefore shape not only the size of the global gains from AI, but also who receives them.
